Prejudice |
The goal of revenge is seen both with Victor and the monster. The monster seeks revenge because Victor has created him as this ugly fiend and has now left him alone in this cruel world. Victor craves revenge upon the monster because the monster is murdering his family. Yet with both characters revenge is seen as this last resort, something they turn to when they have nothing left to motivate them.

All who see the monster automatically believe that he is this great terrifying being who would love to rip them apart piece by piece. Yet in reality the monster started out as a rather kind and caring creature that craved only to have a friend in this world. Because of the prejudice of people, the monster was cast out and judged and turned towards his own prejudice towards people. No one could ever love a creature so hideous no matter how kind and caring he was.

Companionship & isolationBoth the monster and Victor deal with companionship and isolation. With the monster, he begins not understanding the world, yet in the end what he craves most is companionship. It is seen that when he has no companionship, he is driven to isolation and this is what causes him to be evil. With Victor he starts out with companionship with his Family. But leaves his family for knowledge and glory and is driven into isolation. Just when Victor is getting back into his family they are slowly all taken and Victor becomes isolated and turns to hatred of the monster. |
gothicFrankenstein plays on the gothic elements by having rather mysterious supernatural events throughout the book. The creation of Frankenstein is vague, yet gives the story this supernatural like feel, as this monster pretty much comes out of nowhere. The story also has a gloomy and dark feel to it, such as on the night when Victor sees the monster in the thunderstorm , and with all the death and depression that Victor has to deal with. As well deals with many damsels in distress because Victor decided to play God and he was beat. |
ambitionIn this book both the monster and Victor are driven by ambition. Victor wants glory, so he goes to college and works endlessly on his earth shattering discoveries, and with this endless pursuit of glory came isolation. The monster only wants companionship and does whatever he feels he should to get a friend. So at this moment they can be seen as foils. However later on in the book they are parallels because they both are obsessed with revenge on each other. Victor chases the monster around the world in order to get revenge. His sole purpose is to beat the monster he created, while the monsters sole purpose is to cause his creator pain. |
